Before Annexation: UAE Executes Torture and Arrests to Intimidate Socotra Residents

After witnessing a large protest in the streets of Qalansiyah district in the Socotra Archipelago last Monday, in response to the continuous collapse of basic services and rising fuel and electricity prices.
Media reports revealed intensive movements by Emirati officers and leaders within the Southern Transitional Council, led by Imad Al-Kathiri, targeting around 20 Yemeni citizens who participated in the protests.
The reports indicated that these actions aim to arrest the participants and subject them to systematic torture methods, in a clear strategy to instill fear among the population and send a threatening message that any opposition to Emirati policies or criticism of security interventions will be met with relentless violence.
The reports further added that these actions are being carried out in a systematic manner to break the will of the protesters and force the community to accept the imposed reality, whether through raising fuel prices, which sparked the recent protests, or by accepting the Emirati military presence without objection.
Local residents expressed their condemnation of these measures, affirming their right to express their demands without violating their dignity.
The protests erupted as a reaction to alleged manipulation of fuel prices, which exacerbated the living burdens on citizens.
In the backdrop of the crisis, the National Socotra Conference blamed the economic policies of the Southern Transitional Council, noting that the Emirati monopoly over the fuel sector through the “ADNOC” company led to a sharp rise in prices, further worsening the suffering of the residents.
It is noteworthy that the UAE occupied Socotra Island in April 2018.
