Sana’a received its first Arab Prime Minister since the start of the war led by the Saudi-UAE coalition against Yemen, as former Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi arrived in the Yemeni capital on Wednesday. Media sources in Sana’a reported that Abdul Mahdi landed at Sana’a International Airport, where he was welcomed by the Minister of Transport in Sana’a’s government, Mohammed Ayash Qaheem. This visit comes amid intensive regional and international efforts to persuade Sana’a to de-escalate, with U.S. efforts to open communication channels with Sana’a through Iraqi mediation. Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had a phone call with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, during which Iraqi media reported that Washington expressed its willingness to halt the attack on Yemen in exchange for Sana’a’s commitment not to target American ships and warships in the Red Sea. It is likely that Abdul Mahdi is carrying a message regarding this matter to Sana’a’s leadership, in addition to his participation in the annual Jerusalem Conference organized by Sana’a.
