Salaries Erode… and Education Crumbles in Government-Held Areas

NYN | News

The city of Taiz witnessed a massive protest today, Sunday, organized by the Union of Educators, as hundreds of teachers took to the streets once again to demand higher wages and a restructuring of the salary scale. They reaffirmed their ongoing open-ended strike, now entering its third month.

Protesters carried banners calling for improved living conditions, payment of overdue salaries and allowances, and urgent action to address the rapid collapse of the national currency, which has severely diminished their purchasing power and worsened their daily suffering.

In a statement issued by the union, teachers expressed deep frustration over the government and local authorities’ continued disregard for their demands, despite the escalating economic crisis that has pushed many to the brink of starvation, amid a lack of practical solutions or serious initiatives from the relevant authorities.

The statement stressed that teachers will not back down from their demands, urging immediate action to save the education system and uphold the dignity and rights of educators.

It also emphasized that the strike and protest activities will continue until all demands are met.

  • Amid this situation, areas under the control of the internationally recognized government are experiencing severe economic hardship, with the local currency in free fall and financial stability absent—casting a heavy shadow over citizens’ daily lives.
