The United Nations Returns to Aden: New Diplomatic Moves

NYN | News

Amid escalating regional tensions and a rapidly worsening economic crisis in southern Yemen, the United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, arrived in the city of Aden on Monday evening as part of a new round of efforts aimed at reviving the stalled peace negotiations between Yemeni parties.

In a brief statement upon his arrival at Aden Airport, Grundberg said:
“I return to Yemen at a time when the regional situation is becoming increasingly complex, which makes our efforts to achieve a just and sustainable peace more difficult.”

He added that his visit comes at a time when Yemen is witnessing a “relative calm”, describing it as an important opportunity to push forward on addressing economic and security issues as a prelude to a comprehensive political settlement.

The UN envoy stated that he looks forward to holding serious and in-depth talks with various Yemeni parties in an attempt to break the political deadlock that has gripped the scene for many months.

Grundberg’s visit is part of cautious diplomatic efforts led by the United Nations to bring Yemeni parties back to the negotiating table, amid growing concerns that regional spillovers may further complicate the chances of reaching an agreement.

Adding to the challenge is the severe economic deterioration in areas under the control of the internationally recognized government, where the local currency is collapsing at an accelerating pace—particularly in Aden—further increasing pressure on stabilization efforts.
