For the First Time: Sana’a Issues Strongly Worded Warning to UN Envoy

NYN | News

The Sanaa-based government has, for the first time, accused the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, of abandoning neutrality and displaying blatant bias in favor of the U.S.-Israeli coalition. This comes in response to a statement he issued regarding military operations targeting vessels linked to Israel in the Red Sea.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sanaa stated that the UN envoy’s statement “reflects a lack of balance and objectivity and completely turns a blind eye to the root causes of the maritime escalation—chief among them, the brutal crimes committed by the Zionist entity against the Palestinian people in Gaza.”

The ministry added that the statement should have expressed clear concern over Israel’s repeated aggression against Yemen, particularly the targeting of vital civilian infrastructure, rather than blaming defensive reactions that come in the context of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Sanaa’s government believes that the envoy’s current approach is deepening mistrust in him and making it difficult to engage with his efforts, which are supposed to be grounded in neutrality and balanced positions—not driven by the dictates of one side over another.

Sanaa’s Foreign Ministry also hinted at potential escalatory steps, warning that continued bias could push Sanaa to take further measures beyond merely suspending official contact with the envoy’s office if corrective action is not taken.

The statement concluded by stressing the need for Grundberg to adhere to his core responsibilities—namely, facilitating the peace process and alleviating the humanitarian suffering that has persisted for over a decade—instead of issuing “politicized” statements that widen the trust gap between the parties.
