Taiz Boils Over… The Voice of the People Rises Above the Gunfire

NYN | News

The city of Taiz witnessed a wide-scale popular escalation on Thursday, as thousands of demonstrators flooded the main streets in a spontaneous outcry against the deteriorating living conditions, collapsing public services, and the rapidly worsening economic crisis in areas controlled by the internationally recognized government.

Protesters chanted angry slogans demanding an end to the currency collapse and the regulation of prices, amid an almost total absence of basic services—especially water and electricity—which has deepened the daily suffering of residents and pushed the situation to the brink of explosion.

In an attempt to disperse the crowds, security forces loyal to the internationally recognized government fired shots into the air. However, the popular movement persisted with determination, fueled by a buildup of crises that have weighed heavily on the people.

According to eyewitnesses, the protests were spontaneous and unorganized, yet they reflected the depth of public outrage and the eroding trust in local authorities, whom citizens accuse of corruption and failure to meet even the most basic needs.

Protesters asserted that officials appointed by the Saudi-led coalition have become preoccupied with dividing power and reaping financial gains—at the expense of the population’s growing hardship. They called for the removal of these officials and the prosecution of those involved in corruption and negligence.
