Local authorities in Mukalla city violently dispersed a teachers’ protest on Tuesday using tear gas and fire trucks, which sprayed the demonstrators with dirty water in an attempt to break up the gathering—sparking widespread outrage among residents.
The protest came in response to the abduction of teachers’ union leaders, with demonstrators chanting slogans demanding the resignation of Governor Mabkhout bin Madi, and vowing to continue their movement until their demands are met.
Teachers in Hadramout have been on strike since August, calling for better living conditions, alongside growing public anger over power outages, deteriorating public services, widespread corruption, and the looting of public funds.
