An American news outlet has revealed that the USS Harry S. Truman, a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, is still suffering from external damage that remains unrepaired, months after returning from a mission in the Red Sea.
According to Business Insider, the damage was caused by a collision with a cargo ship off the Egyptian coast in February. Instead of being properly repaired, the carrier’s outer hull was simply repainted to conceal the impact marks.
The report noted that photos taken last Sunday during a celebration at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia, marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy, showed a large banner covering the damage on the side of the carrier.
A U.S. Navy spokesperson told the outlet that the cosmetic damage would be addressed during an upcoming comprehensive maintenance cycle.
The Truman had collided with the commercial vessel Beşiktaş while sailing in the Mediterranean Sea near Port Said, after its temporary return from the Red Sea following the Gaza ceasefire.
The report added that the carrier underwent emergency repairs in Greece, then returned to the Red Sea to participate in the U.S. bombing campaign in Yemen carried out under the Trump administration in March.
It also mentioned that the Truman lost three F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets during attacks by Sana’a forces, before finally returning to the United States in June.
