The governorates of Abyan and Shabwah witnessed a wave of armed tribal clashes on Wednesday that erupted suddenly in crowded public markets, resulting in casualties and sparking panic among residents.
In the city of Ja’ar in Abyan, fierce fighting broke out in the qat market between members of the Al-Maraqisha and Al-Subayha tribes, with live ammunition and hand grenades used during the confrontation.
Local sources reported that the clashes escalated abruptly, causing widespread panic among vendors and shoppers. A Somali woman who happened to be near the market was killed, and several others were injured and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. No final casualty figures have yet been released.
In Shabwah Governorate, similar tribal clashes erupted in the old market of Nisab District, between members of the Al-Suraimi family and their relatives from the same tribe.
Although the exact cause of the conflict remains unclear, the use of light and medium weapons led to an immediate closure of shops and heightened tension and fear among citizens.
Injuries were reported on both sides, though accurate figures and details remain unavailable.
These incidents come amid rising tribal tensions in parts of southern Yemen, alongside growing public calls to strengthen security and control the spread of weapons in markets and other vital areas.
