From Mecca to a Cell: The Painful Story of a Yemeni Journalist Detained Without Charge

NYN | News

The branch of the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate in the governorates of Hadhramaut, Shabwah, Al-Mahra, and Socotrahas issued an appeal to Hadhramaut Governor Mabkhout Mubarak bin Madi, urging him to urgently intervene and follow up on the case of journalist Mujahid Mohammed Al-Haiki, who has been detained in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since last August without any disclosure of the reasons for his arrest.

In an official memorandum addressed to the governor, the branch explained that it had received a report from Al-Haiki’s family stating that he has been detained for more than two months, with no official clarification regarding the circumstances of his detention. This has caused deep concern among his relatives and sparked widespread reaction within journalistic circles and public opinion in Hadhramaut and Yemen as a whole.

The syndicate branch called on Governor Bin Madi, in his official capacity, to contact the relevant authorities — including the Yemeni ambassador to Saudi Arabia, the Yemeni consulate in Jeddah, and the Saudi ambassador to Yemen — to obtain details about the case, determine the journalist’s condition, and work toward securing his release and ensuring his safety.

Journalist Mujahid Al-Haiki was reportedly arrested by Saudi security authorities on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, while returning from performing Umrah with his mother.
