A Controversial Condemnation: Is the Aden Government Siding with Israel?

NYN | News

The internationally recognized Yemeni government, through its Minister of Information Muammar al-Eryani, condemned the targeting of the Israeli-linked commercial vessel Magic Seas, which was attacked off the coast of Al-Hudaydah in the Red Sea. The attack caused a fire onboard and damage to its cargo, amid reports that the ship has begun to sink.

What’s unusual about the Aden government’s stance is that it comes despite repeated announcements by the Sana’a government of its intent to target vessels linked to Israel—particularly those headed to the port of Haifa—as part of its declared support for the Palestinian resistance. This has led observers to describe the statement as an “unjustified alignment” with Israeli interests.

The Aden government called on the international community to provide direct military support for what it described as the “restoration of full control over the coastal strip,” with the aim of halting attacks on ships, securing maritime navigation routes, and protecting maritime security in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab.

Analysts believe this position could further widen the divide between Sana’a and Aden and add new layers of complexity to the political process and ongoing negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive settlement—particularly given the involvement of competing regional and international agendas in the Yemeni crisis.

Reuters had earlier confirmed in a report that the Magic Seas is linked to Israel and was en route to the port of Haifa at the time of the attack, lending credibility to Sana’a’s account regarding the nature of its maritime operations in support of the Palestinian cause.
