Tension continues in Al-Wazi’iyah District in Taiz Governorate, southwestern Yemen, as clashes intensify between tribal gunmen and forces loyal to Tareq Saleh, amid local protests against the security campaigns that have been ongoing in the area for days.
According to local sources, clashes erupted on Friday in the Al-Hadharah area following an attack carried out by tribal gunmen on positions belonging to the security campaign, during which light and medium weapons were used.
During the confrontations, the gunmen managed to take control of the Al-Rawajil mountain range after chasing members of the campaign near its highest peak.
The sources added that the gunmen launched another attack on a security checkpoint in the Al-Mateen area, coinciding with the downing of a reconnaissance drone belonging to Tareq Saleh’s forces after it flew over several villages and mountains in Al-Wazi’iyah.
The sheikh of sheikhs of Al-Wazi’iyah, Mansar Al-Mashwuli, called for the immediate withdrawal of the security campaign forces from positions near the villages, in preparation for reaching fair solutions and easing tensions before it is too late.
Al-Wazi’iyah has witnessed rising public anger in recent days following raids and incursions carried out by Tareq Saleh’s forces in search of wanted individuals, amid complaints of violations affecting citizens’ homes after an assault incident that targeted a humanitarian organization in the area.
