The discovery of a buried safe in one of Aden’s neighborhoods has stirred widespread buzz on social media platforms, following news that it was uncovered during renovation work initiated by a new tenant of a building that had been closed for years.
When official authorities became involved, what started as mere public curiosity turned into a formal field investigation.
Local sources reported that the location where the safe was found—Al-Najm Pharmaceutical Storage—had remained shut for years due to an inheritance dispute among the property’s heirs, who eventually agreed to lease it out.
During renovation work that included digging to replace water pipes, workers were surprised to find a buried safe underground.
Speculation quickly spread regarding the nature and ownership of the safe. Some local media, citing Aden Al-Ghadnewspaper, reported that the building once belonged to an Adeni citizen of Persian origin named Nosheer Tangri. Other sources suggested the safe may have belonged to a Jewish merchant who had previously owned the building, before it was passed on to the Persian pharmacist Tangri. A third set of sources claimed the owner was from Sanaa and did not possess the keys to the safe.
As public interest grew, local authorities intervened, dispatching a team from the Antiquities Authority to assist in the extraction of the safe, a process carried out with great caution to avoid any potential damage to its contents.
The operation took place under strict security measures, before the safe was finally opened and its contents examined.
Southern journalist Fathi Bin Lazraq posted initial video clips showing some of the items removed from the safe, including documents, papers, and unidentified keys.
Among the notable items was a commercial reference book dated 2006, which raised further questions about the timeline and origin of the contents.
As of the time this report was written, neither the Aden police nor judicial authorities have issued a statement clarifying the legal ownership of the safe or announcing any preliminary findings, leaving room for continued public and media speculation.
