After Months of Suspension… World Food Programme Resumes Operations in Sana’a

NYN | News

The Sana’a-based government announced on Sunday that the World Food Programme (WFP) has officially informed them of its readiness to resume the distribution of humanitarian aid in areas under their control, following a months-long suspension due to a funding crisis.

The announcement came during a meeting between Sana’a’s Foreign Minister, Jamal Amer, and the WFP’s Acting Resident Representative, Bai Thapa, who delivered an official letter from the organization’s leadership confirming the launch of the second phase of the Emergency Food Assistance Project.

Minister Amer stated that this move could mark a new beginning in restoring trust between the two sides, but emphasized the importance of concrete actions on the ground to ensure the continuity of humanitarian work and to prevent future disruptions.

For his part, the WFP representative explained that a senior envoy from the organization’s headquarters in Rome is currently working with donor countries to secure the necessary funding. This would allow the restoration of relief operations to their previous levels, which had been significantly reduced due to the funding gap.

The development follows months of suspension, which had further worsened living conditions in a country experiencing one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
