Somali media reports have revealed that the United Arab Emirates carried out what was described as its first joint intelligence operation launched from the “Somaliland” region, days after the announcement of an agreement between the Israeli entity and the region’s secessionist authorities.

Smuggling al-Zubaidi via Berbera

The local Somali Shabelle News Agency reported that the operation involved the smuggling of the head of the Southern Transitional Council, Aidarous al-Zubaidi, who was transported by sea through the port of Berbera, which is under the control of “Somaliland,” in a move considered a dangerous precedent.

Mogadishu: A Serious Violation of Sovereignty

Somali authorities considered the use of Mogadishu International Airport in the operation a grave violation of the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia and of applicable immigration regulations, stressing that what occurred constitutes a clear breach of existing arrangements and bilateral agreements.

Direct Accusation Against the UAE

In a direct reference to the UAE, an official statement explained that Abu Dhabi led the smuggling operation, starting with transporting al-Zubaidi by sea to “Somaliland,” and then by air from Mogadishu to Abu Dhabi, calling on all parties to respect Somalia’s national sovereignty.

Official Investigation and Firm Warning

The statement emphasized that facilitating the escape of wanted individuals or carrying out unilateral operations on Somali territory without legal authorization is “categorically rejected and non-negotiable,” noting that an official investigation has been opened into the circumstances of the incident.

Supportive Stance Toward Saudi Arabia

The Somali authorities concluded by affirming their support for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the measures it is taking in southern Yemen, pointing to the sensitivity of recent developments and their regional repercussions.
