The Al-Wadiah border crossing witnessed intense armed clashes on Saturday following a failed assassination attempt targeting the crossing director, Amer bin Habish Al-Sayari, while he was attending an official meeting with a Saudi committee at his residence. The attack caused panic among travelers and staff at the site.
According to media sources, the assault was carried out by an armed group led by a liaison officer named Fares Al-Jama’i, known as “Abu Omar,” who is linked to military commander Hashem Al-Ahmar. The attackers stormed the director’s residence and opened heavy fire with the intention of assassinating him.
The security detail assigned to protect the director intervened, leading to clashes that lasted for about an hour, amid a chaotic and fearful atmosphere among travelers and employees.
Sources reported that the liaison officer involved in the attack managed to flee to an unknown location after the clashes, with no casualties or material losses recorded.
The crossing is currently under heightened security alert, with calls mounting to uncover the circumstances and true motives behind the incident — particularly amid rising tensions after the internationally recognized Yemeni government demanded last week that the crossing’s revenues be transferred to Central Bank accounts, after years of being directed to the benefit of military leader Hashem Al-Ahmar.
