An Unexpected Deal: Saudi Arabia to Hand Over Southern Provinces to the Houthis

NYN | News

An analysis published by the international “Geopolitics Monitor” revealed that the secessionist project of the Emirati-backed Southern Transitional Council in Yemen, coupled with Saudi Arabia’s failure to support the legitimate government, has led to the dismantling of state institutions, creating conditions that have allowed the Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) to rise as a national force opposing foreign domination and working to strengthen Yemen’s sovereignty.
The analysis, written by Paolo Aguiar, confirmed that the weakness of the internationally recognized government, resulting from the contradictory policies of the UAE and Saudi Arabia, has opened the door for the Houthis to fill the security and political vacuum, extending their influence into the south as part of a resistance against the fragmentation the country is undergoing.
It was explained that the Southern Transitional Council’s control over parts of southern Yemen has not translated into effective alliances with anti-Houthi forces (Ansar Allah), increasing the likelihood of the collapse of the central authority.
The analysis also pointed out that political divisions have made it easier for the Houthis to target vital areas of strategic importance, such as Marib and Taiz.
The report further indicated that the Houthi expansion could strengthen their control over oil resources, granting them new dominance and giving them leverage in any upcoming peace negotiations.
It also noted that the Houthis’ resilience in the face of Western pressure, especially regarding the Red Sea shipping crisis, has increased their local popularity and their ability to mobilize supporters.
The analysis saw Iranian support as enabling the Houthis to develop their offensive capabilities, while Saudi Arabia’s cautious stance on new military escalation is facilitating the Houthis’ southward expansion. However, it is believed that the UAE, which may intervene again to protect its interests and ensure its presence in Yemeni ports, will not accept this.
In the midst of this situation, the Houthis (Ansar Allah) are emerging as a national force resisting foreign interventions, with their success in disrupting Emirati and Saudi plans to dismantle Yemen being notable up to this point.
