Arabsat Enters Yemen: A Technical Advancement or a Sovereignty Breach?

NYN | News

The Yemen International Telecommunications Company “TeleYemen,” affiliated with the internationally recognized Yemeni government, announced on Saturday the signing of an agreement with the Arab Satellite Communications Organization “Arabsat” to establish a satellite ground station in the city of Aden.

According to a statement published on the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology’s official website, the agreement was signed in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. The project aims to establish a modern station to serve key sectors, including: small and medium enterprises, banks and stock exchanges, internet service providers, telecom companies, military and security institutions, as well as the oil, gas, and mining sectors, and non-governmental organizations.

The ministry emphasized that the new station represents strategic infrastructure for the Yemeni government and will provide multiple services, including satellite TV broadcasting, mobile backhaul connectivity, Internet of Things (IoT), distance learning, digital health, and high-speed internet access.

However, activists and media outlets supportive of the Yemeni government expressed concerns that the move could be part of a broader Saudi plan to take control of the telecommunications sector as part of the ongoing economic war. They called for transparency regarding the details of the agreement and for guarantees to ensure the independence of its technical and financial management.

Meanwhile, activists and media outlets aligned with the Sanaa-based government voiced similar concerns, warning that the initiative may be a step in Saudi Arabia’s efforts to dominate Yemen’s telecommunications sector as part of its economic warfare strategy.
