Beneath the Rubble: Details of the Most Severe Attack on STC Forces in Months

NYN | News

The Al-Mahfad district in eastern Abyan province witnessed a deadly twin attack on Tuesday morning, carried out by gunmen suspected of belonging to Al-Qaeda. The assault targeted the government complex where the First Support and Reinforcement Brigade of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) is stationed.

Local sources reported that the attack began with two car bombs, followed by intense clashes between the attackers and STC forces at the site. The assault resulted in the deaths of five soldiers and injuries to 12 others from the STC’s Support and Reinforcement units.

According to the same sources, seven Al-Qaeda fighters were killed in the hours-long confrontation. In response, tight security measures were imposed around the district amid fears of further attacks.

This is considered the most violent attack in Abyan province in months and comes amid a surge in Al-Qaeda operations targeting UAE-backed STC positions across southern Yemen — despite ongoing security campaigns by STC forces to dismantle the group’s presence.
