The suffering of Yemeni students studying abroad, particularly in Egypt, has worsened due to the delay by the internationally recognized Yemeni government in disbursing their financial allowances. On Sunday, the students organized a protest to express their frustration and legitimate demands.
According to a statement issued during the protest, students are facing severe difficulties caused by irregular payment of quarterly stipends, additional university fees beyond their means, and psychological and living pressures that are negatively affecting their academic performance and future.
The statement reaffirmed the students’ adherence to the promise made by the Minister of Higher Education in June 2025, which pledged to close the financial gap by mid-2026. However, it noted that the implementation has been slow and incomplete, and the financial gap continues to widen.
The students called on the Yemeni government, along with the Chairman and members of the Presidential Leadership Council, to immediately release the delayed stipends from the third quarter of 2024 through the fourth quarter of 2025, as well as pay tuition fees, book allowances, and travel tickets for graduates and their families. They also demanded the reinstatement of allowances for those whose names were unlawfully removed from scholarship lists.
Furthermore, the students urged the Yemeni ambassador and cultural attaché in Egypt to activate the cultural cooperation protocol between Yemen and Egypt, coordinate with Egyptian authorities to exempt students and their families from residency fees, and resolve issues related to the enrollment of students’ children in Egyptian schools.
The statement concluded by affirming that the students will continue their peaceful protests and escalate their actionsuntil all issues and grievances are fully addressed.
