Bloomberg reported on Wednesday that the Pentagon confirmed that the forces of the Sana’a government, or the “Houthis” as they are called, are using weapons that can reach the Mediterranean Sea.
The agency quoted an “unnamed official discussing the private talks” as saying: “The US government is concerned that the Houthis have the capability to expand their strikes on shipping outside the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to the Mediterranean Sea.”
He added that “Ansar Allah in Yemen has advanced weapons and their deployment of anti-ship ballistic missiles is almost unprecedented, in addition to their use of drones in their attacks.”
The Monitor website mentioned that the forces of the Sana’a government warned earlier this month that they would expand their ongoing campaign of attacks on Israeli ships or those heading to “Israel” in the Red Sea to include ships in the Mediterranean.
The forces of the Sana’a government have been targeting Israeli-related ships in the Red and Arabian Seas since late last year, before announcing the expansion of their operations to part of the Indian Ocean.
They had previously announced the start of the fourth phase of escalation against ships “even to the Mediterranean” in order to support the Palestinians in Gaza.
They say their operations against “Israel” will continue until the latter stops the genocide in Gaza and lifts the blockade.
In response, the US and Britain carried out air strikes on Yemen, and the Sana’a government forces announced that their operations would include targeting American and British commercial and military ships in response to what they called the “American-British aggression.”
The European Union announced on February 19, 2024 the launch of a military operation called “Aspides” led by Italy in the Red Sea, while the United States announced the launch of an operation called “Prosperity Guard”, aiming to confront the attacks launched by the Sana’a government forces against “Israel”.
