Despite the Gunfire, Public Anger Continues to Surge in Hadramout

The city of Seiyun and other areas in the Hadramout Valley are witnessing an intensifying wave of public anger, as mass protests erupted again on Monday morning over worsening public services and repeated power outages — a scene that has become a daily occurrence since the beginning of last week.

The demonstration began at the main market and proceeded toward the government complex, amid a complete shutdown of shops and public facilities — a clear message that public patience has run out.

Protesters set car tires ablaze to block roads and chanted slogans demanding the dismissal of Governor Mabkhout bin Madi and the departure of what they called the “corrupt government.”

While security forces opened fire near the government complex to disperse the demonstrators, protesters in the city of Tarim, east of the valley, continued to block the international highway, causing long lines of trucks and transport vehicles to pile up on both sides of the road.

These developments come amid growing public outrage following the killing of young protester Mohammed Yadin by security forces during earlier demonstrations in Tarim. The incident prompted the provincial security committee to announce the arrest of the suspect involved and refer him for investigation, affirming it would not allow Hadramout to be dragged into a “state of chaos.”

In its statement, the security committee called on residents to exercise restraint and prioritize dialogue, urging local community leaders and media outlets to play a role in calming tensions and safeguarding the province’s stability.

However, despite these calls, the streets of Hadramout remain in turmoil, with the situation threatening further escalation unless the collapse of basic services is addressed and genuine channels are opened to respond to citizens’ demands.
