Egyptian military expert Major General Mohamed Abdel Wahed commented on the success of the Sanaa government forces in targeting the American aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower, noting that this was the second targeting within twenty-four hours.
He explained that there have been six strikes and attacks on American forces in the Red Sea, varying between American warships that violated the imposed ban on the Red Sea.
He noted that “the targeting was carried out with missiles and drones, and this significant leap in these weapons has undoubtedly changed the balance of military power not only in the region but across the world.”
Major General Abdel Wahed continued: “It is sufficient to mention the Iranian drones, for example, which have reached very sensitive places in Israel’s strategic depth. This was a turning point, indicating that we must study the capabilities of each party individually.”
He confirmed that aircraft carriers are only possessed by major powers with ambitions beyond their borders. Looking at the American aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower, he noted that its construction cost is approximately $4.7 billion, launched in 1971, and entered service in 1975. It carries a vast military force of personnel and equipment, making it a symbol of American power. Any damage to it is painful and severe, and thus targeting it is undoubtedly a blow to American national security.
The Egyptian military expert pointed out that the aircraft carrier is equipped with missiles and early warning radars, making its targeting a clear breach of American national security. He explained that protecting an aircraft carrier is extremely costly, especially since the system that protects the carrier includes several naval vessels.
He also noted that there are always weaknesses in aircraft carriers and large destroyers, pointing out that the October 1973 War and the earlier success of Egyptian forces in striking the destroyer Eilat confirmed the presence of weaknesses and also demonstrated that smaller naval units are more effective than larger ones.
He pointed out that the proximity of aircraft carriers to narrow areas makes them easier to target and reduces their maneuverability.
Major General Mohamed Abdel Wahed confirmed that “the military impact of targeting the USS Eisenhower may be limited due to its strong armor, meaning it is well-protected. However, the significant impact is the Houthis’ success in the targeting itself. He noted that sinking an aircraft carrier requires large missile capabilities that the Houthis certainly do not possess. However, it should be noted that the missile used to target the aircraft carrier is the cheapest missile in the world, costing between $2,000 and $20,000 per missile.”
He concluded his remarks by saying that “what happened is a great success by all measures and will change the military doctrine in the region and the world as a whole.”
