Haifa Refineries Out of Service: A Strategic Blow or the Beginning of Collapse?

NYN | News

Israel has suffered a major blow to its energy sector following the announcement by Bazan Group—the country’s largest refining company—of the complete shutdown of the Haifa refineries and affiliated facilities due to severe damage caused by direct Iranian missile strikes. The closure comes amid warnings of an imminent fuel crisis that could paralyze vital sectors.

In an official statement issued on Monday and reported by the Hebrew-language economic newspaper Calcalist, Bazan confirmed that the power station within the industrial complex in Haifa had sustained extensive damage, forcing the company to halt all refining and production operations at the site.

“Due to the damage caused by the attacks, all facilities have been completely shut down to ensure public safety and the stability of the system,” the statement said.

The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange has temporarily suspended trading of Bazan shares, citing the company’s failure to disclose the extent of the losses. Israeli media reported that the recent missile strikes targeted the power station directly on Sunday evening, just days after similar attacks hit fuel transport lines and critical infrastructure belonging to the group.

Bazan Group is responsible for producing approximately 60% of Israel’s diesel and 50% of its gasoline, placing the state before an unprecedented challenge in securing its fuel needs should the shutdown persist.

Meanwhile, Sonol—one of Israel’s largest fuel distribution companies—announced that its supply chain had been directly impacted, due to its complete reliance on Bazan as its sole source. The company notified customers that deliveries may be reduced or halted depending on how the situation develops.

The Israeli entity reported the deaths of three individuals as a result of the Iranian missile strikes that hit the power station inside the Haifa refinery complex. Informed sources described the escalation as a direct response from Tehran to recent Israeli airstrikes targeting oil facilities and energy centers inside Iranian territory.

The full repercussions of the attack are still unfolding, with political and economic circles anxiously monitoring the potential paralysis of Israel’s energy sector.

If Israel insists on continuing its war against Iran, the threat may go beyond just economic consequences—it could lead to the unraveling of the very state itself, established through the occupation of Palestinian lands.
