Hebrew Analysis: Shifts in South Yemen Open a New Window of Influence for “Israel”

Hebrew newspaper sees the expansion of UAE-allied forces and the South’s resources as a strategic and economic opportunity for Tel Aviv near international shipping lanes

An analysis published by a Hebrew newspaper revealed an Israeli reading of the rapid developments in southern Yemen, arguing that the growing influence of UAE-backed forces — along with accompanying political and economic shifts — may open new strategic opportunities for “Israel” in one of the world’s most geopolitically sensitive regions.

The Jerusalem Post said that increasing talk of an independent southern entity, supported by significant natural resources, could provide “Israel” with a potential regional ally close to vital maritime routes in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea — waterways that directly affect global trade and energy security.

According to the analysis, this emerging reality offers Tel Aviv strategic alternatives in terms of regional influence amid the transformations taking place in the Yemeni landscape.

The analysis argues that the presence of a party aligned with the UAE in South Yemen could, from an Israeli perspective, help diminish the influence of its regional rivals and create a more favorable environment for building security and political partnerships around the Red Sea.

The newspaper notes that the South — by virtue of its location and potential economic weight — could become an important link in any new regional arrangements aimed at reshaping the balance of power in the area.

The report also highlighted the natural resources in the southern provinces, especially oil, gas, and minerals, suggesting that these could make a potential southern entity an attractive economic partner for “Israel” and for Arab states that have established relations with it in recent years.

According to the analysis, these resources could open new avenues of cooperation for Tel Aviv in energy and investment, giving it greater maneuverability amid market volatility and regional political shifts.

The analysis pointed out that the expanding influence of the Southern Transitional Council in areas traditionally considered within Saudi Arabia’s sphere could disrupt power balances within Yemen and limit Riyadh’s ability to shape events compared to previous years.

The newspaper believes that this shift may allow new players to enter the Yemeni arena as the role of regional actors who once dominated the scene recedes.

In the same context, the report recalled previous statements by Southern Transitional Council president Aidarous al-Zoubaidi in which he expressed openness to normalization with “Israel.” The newspaper argued that such positions could pave the way for future political and economic cooperation, though it downplayed the likelihood of an immediate impact on existing security dynamics.

The Jerusalem Post concluded its analysis by noting that even if the changing political map in Yemen grants “Israel” new influence, it will not necessarily reduce security challenges in the Red Sea or halt operations by Sana’a forces. The newspaper stressed that the Yemeni scene will remain complex and prone to escalation despite regional and international attempts to reshape it.
