Hodeidah Under Bombardment and Riyadh Announces Support — What Awaits Yemen?

NYN | News

On Tuesday, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced the provision of direct support worth $4 million to the Coast Guard forces affiliated with Yemen’s internationally recognized government, under the framework of a broad maritime security partnership launched in the capital, Riyadh, with the participation of over 40 countries.

According to Saudi media, the aim of this support is to enable the Aden-based government’s Coast Guard forces to enhance their operational and training capacities, and to equip them with the necessary tools to improve surveillance of the coastline and territorial waters — serving the stability of the region and the protection of international trade.

The announcement was made during the International Conference on Yemen’s Maritime Security Partnership, organized by Riyadh in cooperation with the United Kingdom and the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

The final communiqué of the conference stated that the next phase will include the establishment of a dedicated secretariat, managed through a technical assistance program designed to coordinate international efforts and ensure that funding reaches its intended destinations. This is expected to help the Coast Guard improve its field performance and generate economic and social benefits for coastal communities.

The statement also noted that the new partnership is a direct response to the growing security challenges in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, where risks to navigation and international trade are on the rise.

The meeting coincided with intense Israeli airstrikes on the docks of Hodeidah Port, aimed at disabling its role in receiving commercial goods — a vital lifeline that supplies millions of Yemenis with essential needs.

Observers believe that this move by Riyadh could further escalate tensions with Sanaa and across the broader Yemeni landscape, potentially having direct implications for ongoing negotiations and the trajectory of military operations on the ground.
