Human Rights Watch: Israeli Airstrikes Are Targeting Journalists and Cameras in Yemen

NYN | News

Human Rights Watch today expressed deep concern over the recent Israeli airstrikes on Sanaa, stating that the attacks highlight the increasing dangers faced by journalists in Yemen.

In a recent report, the organization noted that threats to journalists are no longer limited to local authorities, but now extend to foreign warring parties as well.

The report documented violations by all parties to the conflict against media professionals, with particular reference to the Israeli attack on a media center in Sanaa on September 10, which resulted in the deaths of at least 35 people, including journalists. It also referenced similar strikes in Sanaa and Al-Jawf on the same day.

The report noted that the airstrikes hit a densely populated residential area adjacent to the Old City of Sanaa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and that the attacks occurred while civilians were present in the streets and vehicles.

Human Rights Watch emphasized that broadcast and media facilities are considered civilian objects under international humanitarian law, and cannot be classified as military targets simply for expressing views supportive of or against any party.

The organization also reminded the public of Israel’s prior record of deliberately targeting journalists in the occupied Palestinian territories and Lebanon.

It concluded by stressing the urgent need for increased international pressure to stop Israeli attacks against media personnel, while also calling on all parties in Yemen to respect press freedom and ensure the safety of journalists.
