Citizens in the city of Aden and other provinces under the control of the Saudi-Emirati-backed government are complaining about the exorbitant rise in food prices, including bread.
The price of a loaf of bread in Aden and other southern provinces has reached 100 Yemeni riyals, exacerbating public discontent against the government of Bin Mubarak, which they blame for the deterioration of economic and living conditions.
This comes after an unprecedented collapse of the Yemeni riyal, with the exchange rate surpassing 1,700 Yemeni riyals per US dollar.
Additionally, there are power outages lasting more than 10 hours a day amid a severe heatwave in Aden.
Commenting on the situation, southern journalist Yasser Al-Yafai wrote on his account on the “X” platform: “We are facing a real disaster and an extremely difficult humanitarian situation. I believe people will not endure more suffering after having been patient like Job for the past nine years.”
He added, “A loaf of bread costing 100 riyals means a person needs at least three loaves for breakfast and the same for dinner, amounting to 600 riyals daily, or 18,000 riyals monthly. If a family consists of five members, they would need 90,000 riyals monthly just to cover the cost of bread. This equals a full employee’s salary, making the salary insufficient to cover the cost of bread monthly.”
Meanwhile, journalist Adel Al-Madouri confirmed the scarcity of bread despite its price reaching 100 riyals, saying in a post on the “X” platform: “Yesterday, the electricity was out for 10 hours during extreme heat. A single loaf of bread in bakeries reached 100 riyals yesterday, in addition to its scarcity. Hunger, corruption, and torture—all methods flaying the skin of the citizen, while the government and the presidential council live in another world.”
