The Hebrew newspaper “Walla” reported, quoting an American official, that Israel carried out airstrikes on Hodeidah, Yemen.
Media outlets reported hearing a series of large explosions that struck the coastal city of Hodeidah on the Red Sea in western Yemen.
The website “Axios,” citing an American official, indicated that “Israeli aircraft conducted a strike in Yemen in response to the Houthis’ drone strike on Tel Aviv.”
For its part, the Yemeni TV channel stated that the airstrikes on Hodeidah targeted oil storage facilities in the city’s port, resulting in a massive fire.
“Israel” had previously threatened to respond to a drone attack on Tel Aviv for which the Government of Sanaa’s forces claimed responsibility.
The forces of Sanaa issued a statement about the operation, announcing that the Yemeni armed forces’ air force carried out a significant military operation targeting a critical site in the Yaffa area.
The statement clarified that the operation was executed “with a new drone named ‘Yaffa,’ capable of bypassing enemy interception systems and undetectable by radars, successfully achieving its objectives.”
The Government of Sanaa’s forces confirmed that they have a “bank of targets” in “Israel.”
Since late last year, the Government of Sanaa’s forces have started targeting Israeli sites in the occupied Palestinian territories and attacking Israeli ships and related vessels in the Red and Arabian Seas, before announcing the extension of their operations to part of the Indian Ocean. Recently, they announced the beginning of the fourth phase of escalation against ships “up to the Mediterranean” to support Palestinians in Gaza. They assert that their operations against “Israel” will continue, with the condition of “ending the aggression and lifting the siege on Gaza” to halt their military operations “supporting Gaza.”
In response, the United States and Britain conducted airstrikes on Yemen, prompting the Government of Sanaa’s forces to declare that their operations would include targeting American and British commercial and military ships in retaliation for what they termed “American-British aggression.”
On February 19, 2024, the European Union announced the launch of a military operation named “Aspides,” led by Italy in the Red Sea, while the United States announced the launch of “Operation Prosperity Guardian,” both aimed at countering the attacks launched by the Government of Sanaa’s forces against “Israel.”
