International Internet Cables Cut Off Saudi Coast Disrupt Global Connectivity

NYN | News

Several international undersea internet cables were severed near the city of Jeddah on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, causing slower internet connections in parts of Asia and Europe, according to international media reports.

Microsoft announced today that its engineering teams have begun rerouting data traffic through alternative paths. The company noted that users of Microsoft Azure services may experience increased latency on some routes to and from the Middle East.

The company stated:
“We anticipate longer latency for certain data that previously passed through the Middle East. However, network traffic that does not transit the region remains unaffected. We will continue to provide daily or urgent updates if conditions change.”

The internet observatory organization NetBlocks confirmed that a series of undersea cable outages in the Red Sea has affected internet connectivity in several countries. The incident has been attributed to failures in the SMW4 and IMEWEcable systems near Jeddah.
