An Israeli television channel revealed concerns within Israeli intelligence agencies about the opening of a new front with the Sana’a Government Forces, or what they call the “Houthis,” in the Mediterranean Sea. This information is based on “exclusive” details that Israeli security agencies allowed to be disclosed.
The Israeli channel “i24NEWS” reported that the Houthis in Yemen are expanding their influence across North Africa, Sudan, Egypt, and Morocco with the intention of targeting Israel from these regions. The reports indicate that the Houthis plan to deploy fighters from Yemen to strengthen their presence in these countries, posing a direct threat to Israeli interests in the Mediterranean area. Additionally, intelligence sources point to ongoing efforts to transport weapons to these newly targeted regions.
A source familiar with the situation was quoted saying, “The nightmare scenario is a missile landing in the Mediterranean Sea, which would be a disaster. The threat is not limited to Eilat and the Red Sea; it extends here, off the Israeli coast.”
This development comes shortly after the Sana’a Government Forces unveiled a new domestically-made hypersonic ballistic missile named (Hatim2), which has multiple generations with varying ranges.
Since late last year, the Sana’a Government Forces began striking Israeli targets in the occupied Palestinian territories and targeting Israeli and affiliated ships in the Red and Arabian seas before announcing the extension of their operations to parts of the Indian Ocean. Recently, they announced the start of the fourth escalation phase against ships “even to the Mediterranean” in support of Palestinians in Gaza. They assert that their operations against “Israel” will continue, conditioned on “ending the aggression and lifting the siege on Gaza” to halt their military operations “supporting Gaza.”
In response, the U.S. and Britain launched airstrikes on Yemen, prompting the Sana’a Government Forces to announce that their operations would target American and British commercial and military ships in retaliation for what they called the “American-British aggression.”
The European Union announced on February 19, 2024, the launch of a military operation named “Aspides,” led by Italy in the Red Sea. The United States announced the launch of an operation named “Prosperity Guard,” aiming to counter the attacks by the Sana’a Government Forces against “Israel.”
