U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced on Wednesday the withdrawal of the majority of U.S. forces stationed in the Middle East, in a move described as an emergency redeployment following a series of direct Iranian missile strikes targeting American bases in the region.

Hegseth explained during a joint press conference with the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dan Kane, that the United States had withdrawn more than 90% of its military personnel from bases across the region and relocated them to positions outside the range of Iranian missiles in order to protect American soldiers and personnel.

Redeployment Following Missile Strikes

The U.S. decision came after escalating Iranian missile attacks targeting military bases and locations believed to host American forces and intelligence personnel. The strikes reportedly resulted in casualties among U.S. troops, in addition to incidents involving the downing of fighter jets that Washington said occurred due to friendly fire.

Observers believe the move reflects the scale of the military pressure facing U.S. forces in the region, particularly amid escalating confrontation with Iran and the widening scope of attacks targeting military installations.

Contradiction Between Statements and Reality

Despite the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff affirming that Washington intends to expand its military operations against Iran in the coming phase, the decision to withdraw most forces from the region raises questions about the United States’ ability to maintain operations at the same pace.

Analysts suggest that such a significant reduction in military presence could lead to a relative decline in direct U.S. military activity in the coming days, with greater reliance on air and naval capabilities or remote operations.

Israeli Concerns Over the U.S. Withdrawal

Meanwhile, media reports indicated that the American move has sparked concern within the Israeli government. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly held several calls with officials in Washington, D.C. in a single day in an effort to obtain assurances regarding the continuation of military support.

Tel Aviv fears the possibility of being left to confront its regional adversaries alone should Washington decide to further reduce its direct military role in the region.
