No Smoking in Public Places: Ministerial Decision Comes Into Effect

NYN | News

The Ministry of Local Administration has issued an official circular directed to local authorities in governorates under the jurisdiction of the internationally recognized government, mandating a ban on smoking and the use of all tobacco and nicotine products in public spaces. The decision comes in response to a request from the National Anti-Smoking Program and directives from the Ministry of Health, and is based on Law No. (26) concerning the control of smoking and mitigation of its harms.

This measure aims to reduce the negative health and environmental impacts of smoking and to support national efforts to protect the community and improve the quality of life in public facilities.

According to the circular, the ban covers all public and enclosed places, workplaces, public and private means of transportation, including restaurants, cafés, health, educational, sports, religious, and entertainment establishments, as well as private offices, clinics, and commercial centers.

The circular stipulates that the ban is to be implemented immediately upon issuance, with restaurants and cafés granted a grace period of no more than six months to comply with the decision’s requirements.

The ministry also stressed the importance of posting clear warning signs in all areas covered by the ban, affirming the prohibition of tobacco and nicotine products. It noted that this step is part of efforts to promote health awareness and protect individuals and the environment from the dangers of smoking.
