Protests Without Borders: Three Yemeni Provinces Face an Uncertain Fate

NYN | News

The provinces of Abyan, Lahj, and Taiz are witnessing a growing wave of public protests and sharp criticism amid widespread demands to end rampant corruption and improve basic services, according to Al-Ayyam newspaper, published in Aden.

In Lawdar district of Abyan, citizens continued their protests on Monday for the fourth consecutive week, demanding the dismissal of the district director and several officials accused of corruption. Protesters also called for the provision of essential services such as electricity and water, stressing that they are deprived of the most basic elements of a decent life.

Meanwhile, the leak of an audio recording of an employee at the Lahj electricity department—allegedly bargaining to turn on power in exchange for money transfers—sparked widespread outrage among activists. They saw the recording as further evidence of rampant corruption and chaos within the institution.

Activists called on local authorities to intervene urgently, hold those involved accountable, and restore proper institutional operations.

They emphasized that the continuation of such conditions only deepens the suffering of citizens, calling for comprehensive reforms in public service institutions and decisive measures to curb corruption in order to stabilize services and ease the burden on residents of the two provinces.

In the city of Taiz, public pressure continues to mount, with demands to rid the city of armed gangs allegedly linked to powerful factions within the government. Protesters are also calling for the restoration of security and the return of public buildings and facilities that were forcibly seized by rogue military personnel affiliated with army brigades and security forces—actions condemned as illegal in a statement issued by the local authorities.
