Angry reactions escalated in Sanaa following the detention of former Foreign Minister of the Sanaa government, Hisham Sharaf Abdullah, at Aden International Airport during a medical trip. The incident drew official condemnation from various political forces and calls for his immediate release.
The Political Bureau of Ansar Allah (the Houthis) denounced the detention of Hisham Sharaf as a “criminal and reprehensible act,” describing it as a blatant violation of citizens’ right to travel and freedom of movement. The statement claimed the incident reflects the behavior of “gangs that do not represent any legitimate authority or state in Aden.”
The Political Bureau added that what it called “occupation militias” are engaging in acts of highway robbery and abduction against civilians. It warned the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and “their gangs in Aden” against any harm to Hisham Sharaf or neglect of his critical health condition.
In a related development, the General People’s Congress (GPC) in Sanaa issued a statement confirming that Hisham Sharaf, a member of the party’s General Committee, had left the capital for a medical trip via Aden Airport but was unable to proceed after being detained.
The GPC expressed regret over what it described as “illegal actions at Aden Airport,” stating that these practices reveal a dangerous reality in which the airport is no longer accessible to all Yemenis but has instead become a tool for arbitrary measures.
The party called for the immediate release of Sharaf and held the authorities controlling Aden Airport responsible for his life and well-being, particularly given his critical health condition.
Both statements jointly urged urgent intervention by international human rights organizations to stop such violations and ensure Yemenis’ right to travel and move freely without political or security restrictions.
