Taiz… Shamshan Falls!

NYN | News

The streets of Taiz, under the control of the internationally recognized government, witnessed a large gathering of citizens on Sunday in an angry march dubbed the “Revolution of the Hungry.” The protest was in rejection of the sharp devaluation of the currency, the worsening economic crises, and the deterioration of public services. The protesters renewed their demands for the improvement of living conditions and the restructuring of salaries according to the law, to cope with the skyrocketing prices of basic goods, in a direct challenge to the authorities’ decision to ban gatherings. In an escalation of their position, the protesters announced their firm rejection of the security directive that restricted the right to demonstrate, considering it a suppression of public freedoms and a disregard for the suffering of the people, affirming that their movement would continue until their legitimate demands are met. On the other hand, human rights reports revealed that security forces loyal to the coalition carried out a campaign of arrests targeting activists and unionists involved in the protests, seizing their personal devices and banners that called for combating corruption and ending the economic collapse. The march also called for the dismissal of the controversial governor “Nabil Shamshan,” appointed by the coalition, and local unions accused the coalition of implementing systematic policies to “starve the people” and leaving employees and citizens under the weight of the crises. They urgently demanded the end of the coalition’s military presence and the rescue of the city from complete collapse.
