Bakery and oven owners in the city of Taiz, southwestern Yemen, launched a full-scale strike on Monday for the second consecutive day in protest against a decision by the local authorities mandating the sale of bread by weight, setting the price at 1,200 Yemeni riyals per kilogram.
The strike affected various neighborhoods across the city, leading to an almost complete halt in bread production and sales, sparking widespread frustration among residents struggling to meet their daily needs.
Bakery owners argue that the new pricing system does not take into account the rising costs of production, including flour and fuel prices, warning that continued enforcement would result in severe financial losses for them.
In recent days, the local authority in Taiz shut down several bakeries for non-compliance and reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the decision. Meanwhile, the Association of Bakeries and Ovens described the measures as “arbitrary,” criticizing the lack of consultation with the union and the chamber of commerce. The association warned that the crisis could worsen unless the decision is urgently reviewed.
