Tensions are rising in the city of Seiyun in Hadhramaut Governorate after a number of truck drivers announced a work stoppage in protest against what they described as illegally imposed fees by a security checkpoint located near the airport area.
In a statement issued today, the drivers said that members of the checkpoint are demanding sums of up to 150,000 Yemeni riyals for each truck to pass, even though their goods had already undergone full customs procedures at the Shahan border crossing with the Sultanate of Oman.
According to the drivers, these financial demands have caused the suspension of many trucks in the area, while others were forced to pay out of fear that their goods might spoil — amid widespread complaints about the negative impact of these measures on the transport and trade sectors.
The protesters called on local authorities and relevant security agencies to intervene immediately to put an end to what they described as “financial extortion” and to ensure the free movement of trucks on international routes without obstacles.
