The Heijat Al-Abed road, which links Taiz and Lahj, witnessed one of the most dangerous armed attacks this year, after gunmen targeted a convoy of senior officials from the Coalition-backed Presidential Leadership Council on Monday afternoon.
According to media sources, the gunmen opened heavy fire at the convoy of the Taiz governor as it passed through the Al-Maqatirah district in Lahj governorate, in an attempt to block and directly strike the vehicles.
The sources confirmed that Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan and the commander of the Tur Al-Bahah Axis, Major General Abubakr Al-Jabouli, survived the attack without injuries, while the assault resulted in the killing of four security guards and two of the attackers.
This incident highlights the extent of the security breakdown on roads connecting the southern governorates, where armed assaults continue to recur amid the absence of effective measures to secure the highways.
