The Drill Begins… What’s Happening Between Riyadh and Washington?

NYN | News

Joint military exercises between the Saudi Arabian Army and its U.S. counterpart kicked off on Wednesday at Fort Irwin Base in the United States, under the name “Quincy-1 Exercise.”

According to a statement by the Saudi Ministry of Defense on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the drills began Wednesday at the base located in the Mojave Desert between California and Nevada, with the aim of enhancing operational readiness, exchanging expertise, and achieving integration in joint operations across diverse combat environments. The statement did not specify the duration of the exercise or the number of participants.

Fort Irwin is one of the largest U.S. military bases, covering approximately 1,200 square miles, and regularly hosts large-scale exercises simulating real battlefield conditions, allowing participating forces to deal with realistic combat challenges.

It is worth noting that the United States is currently considering a Saudi request to purchase 48 F-35 fighter jets, amid its policy of maintaining Israel’s qualitative military edge in the region — a move described by Reuters as a significant “incentive” for the Kingdom ahead of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s expected visit to Washington later this month.
