The mourning tent set up in Taiz to honor the late activist Iftihan Al-Mashhary turned into an open platform for the families of victims who have fallen during the years-long wave of security chaos in the city.
In a series of public gatherings, residents called for the lifting of protection over fugitives who have fled to the city of Mocha and are accused of committing murder and serious violations. They urged Presidential Leadership Council member Tariq Saleh, who is backed by the coalition, to swiftly hand over the perpetrators to justice, stressing that continued protection of these individuals is an insult to the victims’ blood and an obstruction of the path to justice.
Participants in the protest pointed out that hundreds of crimes have been committed in Taiz in recent years, reportedly by members of various military and security factions—some affiliated with the Islah Party, others under the command of Tariq Saleh—without any serious measures being taken to hold those involved accountable.
The victims’ families emphasized that Taiz has become an open arena for lawlessness, and that the absence of accountability has emboldened some armed individuals to continue committing crimes against civilians amid official silence.
They called on local and international human rights organizations to document these violations and apply pressure to ensure justice for the victims and to put an end to the prevailing impunity in the governorate.
