To Avoid a Potential Saudi Escalation… UAE Announces Withdrawal of Its Forces from Southern Yemen
A surprise decision following a short Saudi deadline, with analyses suggesting a tactical withdrawal rather than an end to influence.

On Tuesday evening, the UAE Ministry of Defense announced the end of the remaining presence of its military forces in southern Yemen, in a move described as surprising in terms of timing and coming amid unprecedented tension in relations with Saudi Arabia.
Abu Dhabi said the withdrawal decision was taken of its own accord, justifying the step as aimed at “ensuring the safety of Emirati forces.” However, the timing of the announcement coincided with a Saudi deadline giving the UAE no more than 24 hours to withdraw its forces from specific sites in southern Yemen, raising questions about the true motives behind the decision.
Fears of Direct Confrontation
Observers believe the rapid withdrawal reflects serious Emirati concerns over a direct Saudi escalation that could extend to targeting Emirati military presence and personnel in several Yemeni cities and islands, amid indications that Riyadh has shifted from political pressure to military options.
Withdrawal or Redeployment?
These developments raise broader questions about the nature of the Emirati move—whether it is intended to avoid an open military confrontation with Saudi Arabia, or whether it represents a temporary tactical withdrawal aimed at defusing tensions and reorganizing influence at a later stage, especially as the struggle for influence continues in the southern and eastern governorates.
