The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated on Sunday that its forces destroyed a drone launched over the Red Sea from an area controlled by the Sanaa government forces, also referred to as the Houthis, in Yemen.
CENTCOM said in a statement on the X platform, “We successfully destroyed a drone over the Red Sea,” noting that “drones pose an imminent threat to commercial vessels in the region.”
It added that these “actions were taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer for U.S., coalition, and commercial vessels.”
In solidarity with Gaza in the face of the ongoing Israeli aggression since October 7, 2023, the Sanaa government forces began targeting Israeli or related cargo ships in the Red Sea with missiles and drones in November, affirming their determination to continue their operations until the war on Gaza ends.
In response to these attacks, Washington and London have launched air raids and missile strikes on Sanaa government forces’ positions in Yemen since the beginning of this year. In return, the latter announced that they now consider all U.S. and British ships as part of their military targets.
Additionally, the Sanaa forces expanded their attacks to ships passing through the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, and recently targeted ships sailing in the Mediterranean Sea or any location within their weapons’ range, according to their statements.
