The United Nations announced on Wednesday that it will resume its humanitarian air transport flights to areas under the Sanaa government during the current month of February, following approval from the authorities in Sanaa to restart these operations.

The international organization confirmed that the resumption of flights will help facilitate the movement of humanitarian and relief organization staff, enabling them to enter and exit the capital, Sanaa, and the northern areas under the control of the Sanaa government. This is expected to enhance access to assistance for millions of people in need.

UN Coordinator: Flights Are “the Only Currently Available Means”

In an official statement, the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, Julien Harneis, explained that the decision will enable non-governmental organizations to reach these areas “through the only currently available means of travel.”

Harneis noted that the flights will be operated through the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS).

A Glimmer of Hope Amid Renewed Military and Political Escalation

This development comes amid Yemen’s ongoing humanitarian crisis. The United Nations described the resumption of flights as a positive step that could help alleviate suffering, particularly at a time when the country is witnessing renewed military and political escalation in the south and eastern regions.
