Urgent Regional Moves: What Did the UN Envoy’s Office Statement Reveal?

NYN | News

Diplomatic activity surrounding the Yemeni file is intensifying as the United Nations seeks to preserve what remains of political momentum in a war that has dragged on for more than a decade.

The latest of these developments came through the participation of UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg in the “Muscat Mediation Retreat,” hosted by the Sultanate of Oman this week.

In an official statement today, the UN envoy’s office explained that the success of any political process in Yemen depends on the continuation and coordination of regional and national efforts, noting that neutral mediation remains one of the tools capable of handling even the most complex conflicts—provided it receives adequate protection and support.

The statement added that Oman continues to provide a “reliable space for dialogue,” at a time when mediation efforts are facing increasing challenges. Grundberg also expressed his appreciation for the role played by the Sultanate in keeping communication channels open.

The envoy’s office further stated that, on the sidelines of the mediation retreat, Grundberg held a series of bilateral meetings that included officials from Oman, Iran, Qatar, and Yemen, along with representatives of Yemeni political groups.

According to the statement, the discussions focused on the latest developments in Yemen and the region, as well as ways to revive the stalled political process.

The statement concluded by stressing that the cohesion of regional and national efforts is a critical element for advancing the political process in a country entering its eleventh year of war with no clear horizon for a solution.
