The American ambassador to Yemen, Steven Fagin, announced the prevention of the Aden government from signing a peace agreement with the Sana’a government or the so-called “Houthis,” considering it “impossible.”
During a seminar held by the Washington Institute for Political Studies, the American ambassador said: “The Yemeni government will not sign a peace agreement where the Houthis have the upper hand, by continuing to acquire weapons, ballistic missiles, and drones. This is impossible. We cannot achieve real peace with this equation.”
He added: “The peace roadmap presented by Saudi Arabia to the United Nations is not an agreement but the first step in a long road to reach a solution. This roadmap, if we are realistic, will not be feasible in the near term, considering the Houthis’ intentions and motives, and the complexities of this conflict. Therefore, we should not rush, nor should we build unrealistic expectations.”
He continued: “I can say now that we are far from achieving that fundamental solution, but we are working on building some transitional arrangements by creating steps to facilitate the peace process,” without specifying the nature of those arrangements. However, observers said they are related to economic pressures that will be exerted against the Sana’a government.
It is noteworthy that the leader of the Ansar Allah (Houthis) movement, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, said in a televised speech today, Thursday: “The American is trying to entangle the Saudi in pressuring the banks in Sana’a,” considering this “an aggressive step and a dangerous game,” adding: “I advise the Saudi to beware of being caught by the American side to serve the Israeli enemy,” explaining that “targeting banks in Sana’a is an aggression in the economic field, and if the Saudi gets involved to serve Israel, it will face a big problem.”
He continued: “The Saudi is free from problems, so why does it present itself and its capabilities to serve the Israeli enemy?” warning against any “steps supporting the Israeli enemy against our country without justification,” while affirming that: “Any hostile steps against our country will not deter us from our supportive stance towards Gaza, even if some Arab regimes turn to fighting to serve the Israeli enemy.”
Earlier today, the Central Bank in Aden announced the non-acceptance of the old currency, calling on “all individuals, commercial establishments, companies, other entities, financial institutions, and banks holding old currency notes printed before 2016 from various denominations to deposit them within a maximum period of sixty days.”
The bank also called on banks and exchange companies not to deal with Tadhamon Bank, Yemen Kuwait Bank, Yemen Bahrain Shamel Bank, Al-Amal Microfinance Bank, Al-Kuraimi Islamic Microfinance Bank, and the International Bank of Yemen.
