“Wall Street Journal”: The Burning of “Sounion” Confirms the Failure of the U.S.-Led Coalition in the Red Sea

The American newspaper “The Wall Street Journal” stated that the burning of the “Sounion” ship by Sanaa government forces is evidence of the Biden administration’s failure to address external challenges. The incident, the paper noted, reveals the shortcomings of the U.S.-formed coalition to escort ships in the Red Sea.

In its Friday editorial, the newspaper asserted, “The incident of an abandoned ship set ablaze and potentially leaking oil in the Red Sea clearly illustrates the failures of President Biden’s foreign policy.”

The editorial questioned, “Does Biden or any of the potential candidates have a plan to restore order to the global shipping lane now controlled by the Houthis?”

It added, “Instead of taking concrete steps such as targeting radars and bombing the group’s missile depots, the U.S.-led international coalition to escort ships appears to have failed in achieving its objectives.”

Regarding U.S. concerns about potential oil spills from the “Sounion,” the newspaper remarked that “the Houthis, who launch drones and missiles at ships, will not be swayed by lectures on harming fish and local wildlife.”

The editorial also questioned, “Is it time to declare the failure of the U.S.-led international coalition in its mission to escort ships?”

The “Wall Street Journal” further warned in its editorial that “the consequences of failing to deter the Houthis could extend to other regions of the area and the world.”

The newspaper’s editorial was in response to new footage broadcast by Sanaa government forces last Thursday evening, documenting the boarding and burning of the Greek ship “Sounion”, which had been targeted a week earlier for violating the ban on entering Israeli ports.

The footage showed soldiers from Sanaa’s naval forces boarding the ship in the open sea, exploring its facilities, and planting and detonating explosive devices along the ship’s main deck. The footage also highlighted breaches in the ship’s side, caused by remote strikes before the boarding.

The operation was filmed from multiple angles using drones, providing comprehensive coverage of the event.

This broadcast followed a speech by the leader of the Houthi (Ansar Allah) movement, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, who for the first time revealed details of the operation to seize the “Sounion” ship.

Al-Houthi explained that two teams from the naval forces carried out the operation in two stages, destroying the cargo on board after rigging it with explosives and detonating it.

Al-Houthi stated that the operation, as documented in the footage, exposes the false claims of the U.S. regarding its ability to deter Yemeni operations in support of Palestine.
