Washington Pushes Toward Escalation in the South: U.S. Incitement to Assemble Confrontation Tools Against Sanaa

U.S.–Emirati contacts and on-the-ground diplomatic moves to reorganize coalition-aligned factions in preparation for a confrontation with the forces of the Sanaa government.

Amid a gradual escalation unfolding on the Yemeni scene, an Arab newspaper observed that the military path taken by the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council’s separatist forces is not isolated from a U.S. plan aimed at reigniting confrontation with Sanaa by mobilizing and unifying local tools in the south.

Escalation Aligned With the U.S. Vision

According to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, the recent movements of the STC’s forces in southern Yemen clearly intersect with U.S. orientations, which—according to the paper—seek to create a new pressure front against Ansar Allah (the forces of the Sanaa government) after previous bets faltered.

The newspaper argued that this escalatory course is neither an individual nor a random act, but rather part of a coordinated regional context led by Washington through its regional allies, foremost among them Abu Dhabi.

U.S.–Emirati Contact Paves the Way for Escalation

In this context, the paper revealed that developments on the ground in southern Yemen were the subject of direct discussion in a phone call between the U.S. Secretary of State and the UAE Foreign Minister, Marco Rubio and Abdullah bin Zayed.

According to southern sources cited by the newspaper, the call included clear signals about the need for Washington to push Abu Dhabi toward unifying its military tools—represented by STC forces and the militias of Tareq Saleh—as a preparatory step for direct escalation against Ansar Allah.

Reorganizing Coalition-Aligned Factions

The data cited by the newspaper indicate that the United States is working to reorganize the map of coalition-aligned factions in an attempt to overcome the fragmentation and divisions that have long weakened these forces, particularly in the south.

According to observers, this approach reflects a U.S. realization that infighting among factions backed by Riyadh and Abu Dhabi has stripped them of the ability to pose a real threat—prompting Washington to seek their unification today under the banner of confronting Sanaa.

On-the-Ground Moves by the U.S. Ambassador

In the same vein, the newspaper noted that the U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, Steven Fagin, has recently intensified his meetings with leaders of coalition-aligned factions, in a clear effort to push them toward unity against Sanaa.

However, according to the paper, these calls deliberately ignore the reality of the intense conflict between factions loyal to Riyadh and Abu Dhabi themselves, which continue to wage bloody struggles for influence across the south—an image that reflects the depth of division and the failure of external bets.

Sanaa at the Center of Political and Military Targeting

The newspaper concludes that these U.S.–Emirati moves confirm that Sanaa remains at the heart of political and military targeting, and that Washington continues to employ local tools to achieve its objectives, despite the complexities of the field situation and the failure of previous attempts to break the balance of power imposed by the forces of the Sanaa government over the past years.
