The UN expert team downgrades the impact of the sinking of the “Rubymar” ship on the marine environment

NYN | News

A report issued by the UN expert panel on the sunken British ship “Rubymar” in the Red Sea stated that “the ship cannot be salvaged from its location.”

The report added that “the cargo of the sunken ship can gradually leak”, explaining that “it is better to leave it to sink to the bottom of the sea”, and downplayed its impact on the marine environment.

The forces of the Sana’a government had targeted the ship in mid-February last year, after including British and American ships in their list of “targets in retaliation for their aggression against Yemen”.

Since the end of last year, the forces of the Sana’a government have started targeting Israeli-related ships in the Red and Arabian Seas, before announcing the expansion of their operations to part of the Indian Ocean.

The Sana’a forces say their operations against “Israel” will continue until the latter stops the genocide in Gaza and lifts the blockade.

In response, the United States and Britain launched airstrikes on Yemen, with the Sana’a government forces declaring that their operations will include targeting US and British commercial and military ships in retaliation for what it called the “US-British aggression”.

On February 19, 2024, the European Union announced the launch of a military operation called “Aspides” led by Italy in the Red Sea, while the United States announced the launch of an operation called “Prosperity Guard”, aimed at confronting the attacks carried out by the Sana’a forces against “Israel”.
