Al Hudaydah Launches an Integrated Development Project Linking Agriculture, Beekeeping, and Poultry in a Single Production Chain

Local Initiative in Al-Mansuriyah to Enhance Livelihoods and Protect the Environment Through Integrated Agricultural and Livestock Activities

The local authority in Al-Mansuriyah District, Al Hudaydah Governorate, carried out a field visit to Al-Habeel area in Al-Sunaif village as part of completing the implementation phases of the production chains project and building its organizational structures on the ground. This step aims to establish a development model based on economic integration and sustainability, according to the Agricultural and Fisheries Media.

Formation of Specialized Production Groups

The field visit resulted in the formation of three specialized production groups for diverse agricultural and livestock activities. These included maize cultivation, beekeeping and honey production, as well as fodder and dairy activities. Facilitators and organizational extensions were prepared for production units within and outside the agricultural association, ensuring the expansion of benefits to include non-model producers.

Special Focus on Beekeepers and Vegetation Protection

The field meeting focused particularly on forming a production group for beekeepers, amid broad participation by firewood collectors who rely on mountain woodcutting as their main source of income. In this context, an awareness program was implemented to curb excessive cutting of perennial trees and grazing plants, given their direct importance for feeding bees and livestock. This came in response to beekeepers’ complaints and with the aim of protecting natural resources in the area.

Practical Economic Alternatives for Firewood Collectors

Practical economic alternatives were also proposed for firewood collectors by directing them to utilize American mesquite trees spread across agricultural lands and open areas. The woodcutting process would be organized within an alternative production pathway that includes establishing wood chipping units and using the resulting sawdust as bedding in poultry sheds.

Sector Integration and Increased Value Addition

This pathway contributes to recycling poultry waste and mixing it with sawdust to produce organic fertilizers, thereby enhancing value addition within the production chain and linking the beekeeping, poultry, and agricultural sectors into a single integrated system.

Vision for Expansion, Quality Improvement, and Marketing

This approach falls within a broader vision aimed at vertical expansion of honey production, increasing bee colonies, improving product quality, and developing packaging and marketing methods. The ultimate goal is to achieve demand-driven production and localize honey products domestically through a chain that begins with firewood collectors, passes through poultry breeders and farmers, and ends with marketing—thereby enhancing livelihoods, protecting the environment, and improving the efficiency of local production.
